Grief

Thirty short stories on grief, drawn from many traditions: Buddhist parables, Stoic letters, Cherokee teachings, Sufi tales, Hebrew wisdom, and modern psychology. Each one is paired with a small educational reflection and a question to write about. This journal is for those who are mourning — a person, a relationship, a way of life, a future that will not now arrive. Grief is not a problem to solve; it is a country to travel through. There is no schedule for healing. Some days you will read; some days the book will simply sit on your bedside. Both are honourable. Grief takes the time it takes.

A Sample Story

The Mustard Seed

When a young mother named Kisa Gotami lost her only child, she carried the small body from house to house, begging for medicine that would bring him back. Finally she came to the Buddha. He told her gently: 'Bring me a single mustard seed from a household that has not known death.' She set out. At every door she found loss — a parent gone, a brother lost in war, a child taken by fever. By dusk she returned without the seed, but with something else. 'I see now,' she said. 'The grief I thought was only mine belongs to all of us.' Her grief did not vanish. It simply joined the larger grief of the world, and so became bearable.

A Reflection

Grief isolates. We come to believe no one has ever felt this. The truth — that almost every adult who has lived long enough has felt some version of it — does not erase the pain, but it does break the loneliness.

For Your Journal

Who do you know who has loved and lost? What might it mean to be in the company of mourners, rather than alone?

A few honest words: This journal is not therapy. It is not a substitute for medication, for a doctor, for a therapist, or for the love of people who know your name. It is a small companion for the moments in between.
