Change

Thirty short stories on change, drawn from many traditions: Buddhist parables, Stoic letters, Cherokee teachings, Sufi tales, Hebrew wisdom, and modern psychology. Each one is paired with a small educational reflection and a question to write about. This journal is for those who are in transition — leaving a job, ending a relationship, beginning a new chapter, recovering from an illness, growing into a self that has not yet quite arrived. Change is rarely tidy. It does not happen on the calendar we set for it. Most thresholds are crossed slowly. That is not failure. That is what crossing actually looks like.

A Sample Story

The Caterpillar's Soup

Many people imagine that a caterpillar simply grows wings inside its chrysalis. The truth is stranger and more honest. Inside the chrysalis, the caterpillar dissolves — almost completely — into a kind of biological soup. From within that soup, small clusters of cells called imaginal discs reorganise everything into a butterfly. The caterpillar is not improved. It is undone, and remade. Many people in great change feel like they have failed because they feel dissolved. They have not failed. They are doing what real transformation actually requires.

A Reflection

The middle of significant change can feel like coming apart, because in some real sense, you are. The wings are forming, but only on the other side of a dissolution that cannot be skipped.

For Your Journal

Where in your life are you in the soup phase right now? What might be quietly forming, even when you cannot yet see it?

A few honest words: This journal is not therapy. It is not a substitute for medication, for a doctor, for a therapist, or for the love of people who know your name. It is a small companion for the moments in between.
